Lt. Governor Taylor Names Brock Insurance Department’s Director of Communications

Ohio Lieutenant Governor and Department of Insurance Director Mary Taylor has named Chris Brock as the Department’s Director of Communications. In his new role, Brock oversees communication strategy and planning while coordinating communication activities for the Department of Insurance. He previously served the Department as Exchange Outreach Coordinator and was responsible for policy and outreach for health insurance exchange planning.

Brock 's experience includes serving as Manager of Grassroots Advocacy for the Ohio Chamber of Commerce and Communications Assistant to the Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives.

Steve Martindale Named Insurance Department’s Chief Regulatory Officer

Ohio Lieutenant Governor and Department of Insurance Director Mary Taylor named Steve Martindale the Department’s Chief Regulatory Officer. Martindale, who joined the agency on April 25, will oversee the Risk Assessment division, the Product Regulation and Actuarial Services division, and the Fraud, Enforcement and Licensing division.

ODI Highlights Successes of its Missing Life Policy Search Service

The Ohio Department of Insurance’s missing life policy search service is a comprehensive search service that assists Ohio residents, and the families of deceased Ohio residents, in locating lost insurance policies purchased in the state. The search identifies the existence of any life insurance policies or annuity contracts purchased in Ohio and issued on the life of, or owned by, a deceased person.

Joe Garber Named Insurance Department’s Chief Legal Counsel

Ohio Lieutenant Governor and Department of Insurance Director Mary Taylor named Joe Garber the Department’s Chief Legal Counsel. Garber, who joined the agency on April 11, will advise the Department in legal matters and recommend courses of action in legal and administrative proceedings involving the agency. He will also direct the Office of Legal Services, and serve as a liaison with other state agencies and the Ohio Attorney General’s Office.

New ODI Deputy Director & Other Recent ODI Staffing Announcements

Cathy Geyer is the newly-appointed Deputy Director of the Ohio Department of Insurance (“ODI”).  Read the Ohio Department of Insurance press release.

A number of additional ODI staffing positions were also recently announced: Jillian Froment, the former Marysville City Administrator, will be the new chief administrative officer at the Department; Sue Real will serve as the Department’s Chief Policy Officer; Michael Farley will be the new Assistant Director for Legislative Affairs; Carrie Haughawout will oversee issues related to health policy. 

Last week, the Ohio Department of Insurance announced the retirement of Bill Rossbach, who most recently served as Chief Regulatory Officer. Mr. Rossbach joined the Financial Regulation staff in 1976 and was promoted to Assistant Director in 2003 before being named Chief Regulatory Officer in February 2008. As Chief, he managed the Department’s Risk Assessment Division; Product Regulation and Actuarial Services Division; the Fraud, Enforcement and Licensing Division; and Consumer Affairs operation. Mr. Rossbach’s retirement is effective February 28, 2011, and his replacement has not yet been named.

Ohio Governor Kasich Selects a New Insurance Director

On January 11, Governor John Kasich announced his appointment of Lt. Governor Mary Taylor as the Director of the Ohio Department of Insurance.

Ms. Taylor served as the Ohio State Auditor and previously served two terms in the Ohio House of Representatives, representing the 43rd House District. As a member of the Ohio House, she worked for comprehensive tax reform, reduced spending and she was supportive of measures to reform Ohio's tort system.
